KTM RC8 - ELectronics

  • Hey everyone and apologies for the English Language, I am actually Greek and not German.

I hope this does not go againt any rules. I searched everywhere but the most information regarding our bike i found it in this forum using translator.

I already send the message below to a member which i saw in many posts he is an expert so I will just copy paste.

I have an RC8 2088 (Single spark) for the last 4 years which is mainly for track use.

I want to install a traction control system, but I am not a big fan of the aftermarket ones (GRIPONE, IRC etc.)

Then I thought that I can use the traction control system of a 1290 Super duke 2019+.

I thought I could take from the Super Duke the throttle bodies, the ECU, the electronic throttle grip, the complete wiring harness and a dashboard and I could be ok.

Then I saw that the bodies are different sizes. I can use bodies from the RC8R (twin spark) or even make aluminum spacers for the 1290 and connect the wiring from 1290 to twin spark bodies. But also I read in a post something about thermal problems with the second injectors and I am hitting dead end.

What do you guys think I could do in order to fit the 1290 traction system to rc8  ?

P.S. I saw some reviews of the aftermarket Gripone that it is not really good.

    Many thanks! :grins:

You will not be successful with your planned conversion without extensive knowledge and programming options. You must also have very good technical capabilities.

In addition ... what you don't seem to know is that the traction control is not programmed in the ECU, it is an option of the Bosch ABS module used by KTM. Only various data/values that are important for the TC are stored in the ECU.

ECU, MCU, ABS, Dash and the other control units communicate via CAN bus.

The adoption of 1290 electronics in the RC8 alone requires an in-depth adaptation of the ECU programming, otherwise you will only have error messages and the engine will not start. In addition to the knowledge, the software and the hardware, many experiments and tests are necessary to achieve this.

All of this would be beyond any financial scope if you can't do it yourself. I have been working and experimenting on such a project "on the side" and step by step for a long time. But with a tuned 1290 engine ... otherwise it wouldn't be worth doing the project myself.

I am intensively involved with the technology, programming and electronics of the 1290. But the real intention behind this research and the acquired knowledge ... is to incorporate sensible technology into the RC8R without significantly changing its sophisticated ingenuity.

    Grüße / Regards

  • Thanks a lot both of you guys.

I will give it a shot to MCU as well just for the info.

FYI my mechanic friend is an amazing programmer that used to work in the triump racing team as well. I know that anythign can be done, but as you said Stefan is a project that needs time, research etc and i dont want to take so much of his time aside from his main work...

Maybe i will give a try to the latest Gripone and see the results.
